Local hospice boosted by donation from St. James’s Place Foundation

Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice has received a £2,475 grant from the St. James’s Place Foundation to assist the care and support provided by the local hospice.

The donation will allow Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw to purchase comfortable furniture for the recently developed consultation room in the Hospice Reception. The Family Room will provide staff, family and volunteers with a peaceful and private location within the Hospice to have personal and sometimes emotional conversations.

Paul Cookson, Head of Finance and Support Services, said “We are all extremely grateful for this generous donation from the St James Palace Foundation. The development of the Family Room will allow the Hospice to create a discrete and peaceful environment for families and carers at what can be a difficult time.”

Mark Longbottom, Head of the St. James’s Place Foundations, said “Through our support of children’s hospice in the UK, we aim to make a positive difference to the lives of children receiving care, charities like Eden Valley Hospice, who we are proud to support, and who provide expert care to children across Cumbria.

Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw’s specialist team of nurses and doctors provide the highest standards of care and support to local adults and children with life limiting illnesses. The Hospice extends this care to the families, friends and carers of all of the patients.

Hospice fundraiser swims to success

A local woman has raised over £500 for Eden Valley Hospice in memory of her best friend’s father, John Little.

On Saturday 15 June, Helen Johnston, from Carlisle, joined thousands of fellow fundraisers and elite athletes taking to the choppy waters of Lake Windermere at the Great North Swim. Helen, who completed the 1 mile course, raised a fantastic £562 to support the Hospice’s dedicated team of nurses and specialist doctors.

Emma Marshall, Eden Valley Hospice Fundraiser, said “All of the patients, families, staff and volunteers at the Hospice would like to thank Helen for completing this fantastic challenge and raising an amazing amount of money for the Hospice. Without the continued and generous support from the local community Eden Valley Hospice would be unable to care for local adults and children with life limiting illnesses when they need it most.”

Can your run or ride for the Hospice this September and October? Eden Valley Hospice is encouraging the local community to get into the saddle or pull on their running shoes and take part in either Cycle the Solway or the Great Cumbrian Run. Couple walk along Hadrian’s Wall for local hospice

A local couple have followed in the footsteps of over 2,000 years of history by walking the length of Hadrian’s Wall and raising over £650 for Eden Valley Hospice.

Mr and Mrs Bosward, from Thursby, completed the 84 mile walk from Bowness on Solway to Wallsend in 7 days as they crossed the rugged moorland, rolling fields and urban landscapes of Cumbria and Northumberland.

Albert, 71, explained “We used to do a lot of walking. One of the sections of the walk is quite difficult but as long as you have done the training then it is an enjoyable walk. Anybody our age shouldn’t be frightened of it, you can do it.

“We decided to raise money for Eden Valley Hospice because a friend died in the Hospice over 2 years ago and I saw first hand the care provided there, plus my wife is already a supporter of the Hospice.”

Albert and Joan, 72, hope that their challenge through the picturesque landscapes of the north of England will inspire other people to take on their own fundraising challenge and support Eden Valley Hospice. The couple have raised £685 for the Hospice, which will allow the local hospice’s team of dedicated nurses and specialist doctors to provide the highest standards of care and support to local adults with life limiting illnesses.

Albert concluded, “We would like to thank all of our friends, neighbours, fellow bowlers, Thursby Craft Club and the dancers at Hayton School of Dancing for sponsoring us during our walk and supporting Eden Valley Hospice.”

Can you take on the challenge of a life time and support Eden Valley Hospice? In 2014 and 2015 the Hospice will host their very first overseas challenges to Jordan and Morocco.
