The sky is the limit for Hospice fundraiser

The summer a local fundraiser will complete a high octane challenge of a lifetime to support the care provided by a local hospice.

Joshua Skelton, from Carlisle, will release his inner superhero as he undertakes a static line skydive at Skydive Northwest, Flookburgh, in aid of Eden Valley Hospice on Saturday 14 June. The high adrenaline challenge will provide Joshua with the opportunity to remember his grandma who was cared for and supported at the local hospice.

Joshua explained, “I have decided to raise money for the Hospice as it is a charity very close to my family and me. My grandma spent her last days at Eden Valley Hospice back in October 2013, the staff were simply perfect and helped us all at a very difficult time.”

The fantastic static line skydive will see Joshua fly, steer and land his own parachute after jumping out of a plane at 4,500 feet above Cumbria. Unlike a tradition parachute jump Joshua’s parachute will immediately deploy when he leaves the plane as he experiences the thrill of his life in aid of the local hospice.

Joshua continued, “I have been interested in doing a skydive for some time now. I always looked at doing a tandem jump, but when I saw the option of being able to jump by yourself I decided to push myself out of my comfort zone even further and go for it. The decision to raise money for charity whilst doing it just seemed to make sense, and also meant that I couldn’t back out!

“The thing I am most looking forward to on the day will be the feeling of touching back down safely on the ground after completing the jump. Although I’m sure the best feeling will be the jump itself on the day.”

The money raised from the high adrenaline challenge will allow Eden Valley Hospice’s specialist team of nurses and doctors to provide the highest standards of care and support to local adults and children with life limiting illnesses. The Hospice extends this care to all of the patients family and carers.

This August Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice will be hosting their very own tandem skydive fundraising events. The incredible challenge will see fundraisers taking on the challenge of a lifetime by completing the 14,500 feet jump in aid of the Hospice.

Hospice searches for half marathon fundraisers

October may seem like a long time away but a local hospice is encouraging fundraisers to pull on their running shoes in preparation for the 32nd Great Cumbrian Run.

With just under six months to go, Eden Valley Hospice is searching for people ready to take on the 13.1 mile challenge and join their team of fundraising superheroes at the start line on Sunday 5 October.

Last year a group of 30 runners pulled on a Team EV Hospice running vest and raised over £8,000 to support the care and activates provided by Eden Valley Hospice. This year the local hospice is hoping that more fundraisers will pound the streets of Carlisle and support the Hospice’s team of specialist nurses and doctors.

Katrina Sander, Community and Events Fundraising Manger, said “Every year people from throughout the local community pull on an Eden Valley Hospice running vest and complete the Great Cumbria Run, so why shouldn’t it be you? With around nine months to go before the start of the race now is the perfect opportunity to start your training and fundraising before the big event.

“This year we really are hoping to improve the amount of fundraisers taking part in aid of Eden Valley Hospice. All of the money raised during the event makes such a big difference to the lives of local adults, children and families with life limiting illnesses.”

Eden Valley Hospice is also delighted to confirm that they have been selected as one of the chosen charities for this year’s event. In recent years the Great Cumbrian Run has continued to promote the work of Eden Valley Hospice by selecting the charity as one of its partners.

Run for the Hospice at the world’s biggest half marathon

Every year tens of thousands of people pound the streets of Newcastle at the world’s biggest half marathon, each with their own memory, purpose and reason for running and in 2014 you could be there.

Eden Valley Hospice has been awarded 20 places for next year’s Great North Run, on Sunday 7 September. The local hospice is now searching for fundraisers ready to pull on the Hospice’s  running vest and take on the 13.1 mile.

Emma Marshall, Hospice Fundraiser, said “Everybody at the Hospice is delighted to have received a fantastic amount of places for next year’s Great North Run. The iconic half marathon is known all over the world and it will provide everybody with a fantastic opportunity to challenge themselves whilst raising money for the Hospice.”

Earlier this year 20 Eden Valley Hospice runners pounded the streets of Newcastle at the Mini, the Junior and the Great North Run. The group of fundraisers battled through the wet and windy conditions and have pledged to raise thousands of pounds to support the local hospice’s dedicated team of nurses and specialist doctors care for local adults and children when they need it most.
