Cross Border Challenge for Hospice fundraiser

A local woman will be running across a national border in aid of Eden Valley Hospice on Sunday 21 July.

This year’s 10km Cross Border Challenge will be special for Cherie Sykes as she will be running in memory of her mother who sadly passed away last year after an 18 month battle with cancer. Cherie’s chosen charity for this year’s event will be the local hospice where her mother was cared for.

Cherie explained, “This is the least that I can do for Eden Valley Hospice. The Hospice helped Mom and I wanted to give something back and help other people. It is always good to give something back and always nice to give.”

During her battle with cancer Norma attended the Day Hospice at Eden Valley Hospice, as well as spending weeks on the Adult Inpatient Unit in order to balance out her pain medications. The Hospice’s dedicated team of nurses and specialist doctors provide physical and emotional care and activities to local adults and children with life limiting illnesses.

Cherie continued, “My Mom would be so proud that I am helping Eden Valley Hospice and improving my fitness. I never walk when I am training and I am trying to get a better time on the day.”

Do you want to run for the Hospice? You could join Eden Valley Hospice’s group of ‘Team EV’ runners pounding the streets of Newcastle at this year’s Great North Run. The Hospice has a handful of places left for the event giving the local community the opportunity to join the 17 Eden Valley Hospice fundraisers at the start line of this year’s event.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s a hospice superhero! Join #TeamEV

Starting this summer a brand new team of superheroes will begin to sweep across North Cumbria, each of them raising money for Eden Valley Hospice.

Unlike Superman, Spiderman and Catwoman, Team EV superheroes do not need to possess superhuman powers. All that they have to do is raise money and support their local hospice.

Throughout 2013, Eden Valley Hospice will be hosting a variety of challenge and sporting events, from a cycle ride to skydives, giving the local community the perfect opportunity to become a Team EV superhero. Every fundraiser who undertakes their very own challenge in aid of the Hospice will receive an exclusive running vest or t-shirt emblazoned with the Team EV logo to wear at their chosen event.

Katrina Sander, Community and Events Fundraising Manager, said “After being inspired by the success of Team GB at last year’s Olympic Games, Eden Valley Hospice is proud to launch Team EV. The group will unite and support all of the fundraising superheroes who take on a sporting challenge in aid of the Hospice and the exclusive vest and t-shirts will make our superheroes stand out at their event.”

If Eden Valley Hospice does not have an event for you in 2013, the Hospice is encouraging people to take on their own sporting or challenge event. Whether it is a half marathon run or a fundraising walk in the Lake District, everybody has the potential to become a Team EV fundraising superhero.

Can you become a fundraising superhero and raise money for Eden Valley Hospice? Contact the Fundraising Team on 01228 817613 or visit www.evhospice.org.uk/events for more information.

One day, two challenges but only one real winner

A local hospice is encouraging people to be a fundraising superhero for the day and take one of two high octane challenges this July.

On Sunday 21 July, Carlisle will host two unique events allowing Eden Valley Hospice fundraisers the perfect opportunity to become a Team EV superhero. The Hospice is now encouraging members of the local community to sign up for the 2nd Cross Border Challenge or the very first No Ego Urban Challenge.

The brand new No Ego Urban Challenge will offer fundraisers a unique opportunity to test their own ability and leave their egos at home as they take on the off road challenge. The 10km event, which starts and finishes at the Sheepmount Athletics track, will see people tackling over 20 gruelling obstacles, including climbing buses and plunging into freezing water tanks.

The second ever Cross Border 10km Challenge is hoping to build on the success of last year’s event as hundreds of runners’ race across the border from Gretna to Carlisle. Last year’s event saw a group of Team EV fundraisers pulling on a yellow vest and raising money for Eden Valley Hospice.

Emma Marshall, Eden Valley Hospice Fundraiser, said “The No Ego Urban Challenge and Cross Border Challenge offer people the perfect opportunity to challenge themselves and become an Eden Valley Hospice fundraising superhero.”

The Hospice are encouraging anybody participating in either event to contact the Fundraising Team on 01228 817613 if they are raising money for Eden Valley Hospice.
